West Suburban Humane Society
The West Suburban Humane Society (WSHS), founded in 1972 in Downers Grove, is a dedicated, volunteer-based, no‑kill animal shelter that provides compassionate care and loving homes for local cats and dogs. Open six days a week and staffed by a small team along with hundreds of volunteers, WSHS offers boarding for up to 25 dogs and 60 cats at any time, while also placing even more animals in foster homes. Their mission is to ensure every animal finds a safe, permanent, and compatible home—prioritizing veterinary treatment, behavioral assessments, and education initiatives to strengthen the human–animal bond.
Gathering 4 Gardner
Gathering 4 Gardner (G4G) is a 501(c)(3) educational foundation established to honor the legacy of Martin Gardner by fostering curiosity, creativity, and playful exploration across recreational mathematics, puzzles, magic, literature, and science. Founded in the early 1990s by puzzle collector Tom Rodgers and others, G4G organizes a biennial invitation-only conference The Gathering bringing together magicians, artists, scientists, mathematicians, educators, and enthusiasts from around the world for lectures, performances, puzzle exchanges, and collaborative workshops.
Downers Grove Rotary Fest
The Downers Grove Rotary GroveFest, hosted by the Rotary Club of Downers Grove, is a vibrant four‑day summer celebration in downtown Downers Grove each June 19–22. It features a lively carnival midway with around 20 rides and games, a spacious beer garden with craft brews from local favorites like Alter Brewing and Goldfinger Brewing, and a packed entertainment lineup showcasing local bands and performers on a main stage. Families and car enthusiasts alike enjoy the Sunday “Festival of Cars,” while nonprofits staff booths and receive stipends for volunteering—part of the event’s mission to reinvest all proceeds into community scholarships, local charity initiatives, and global projects. With tens of thousands of attendees each year, GroveFest truly lives up to its motto, “It’s all about community,” supporting causes locally and abroad as participants enjoy fun, food, and fellowship in the heart of town.
